Taft’s Poetry Club competed at the Louder Than a Bomb (LTAB) quarter finals at Columbia College on March 6.

Pauline Frendreiss, Tristan Rivera, Laszlo Katona, Julia Soulsby, Maya Sperber, Mo Ivsin, and Gianna Christensen advanced to the semi-finals after taking first at the previous competition.

“This school year, Taft’s LTAB poetry team advanced to quarterfinals for the first time. In this bout, we beat Walter Payton, but we were not able to move on to the semi-finals,” said Club Sponsor Ryan Dooley.

Sophomore Laszlo Katona (Div.129) said, “This is the farthest that Taft has ever been in competition and that I’m excited to better next year.”

According to Dooley, the LTAB competition started small and now has over 130 schools competing. Taft’s Poetry Club competed against poets from Walter Payton, Northside College Prep, Whitney Young and many others.

Taft’s Poetry Club is involved in LTAB “because we have a competitive poetry team” and students “write their poems, perform their poems, and memorize their poems,” said Dooley.

The club is always open and looking for new members.
