On Thursday, January 17, Taft’s wrestling team put on a small appreciation ceremony for their seniors before the match against Riverside Brookfield.

The seniors on the team, as well as their parents, were greeted by head coach Brad Engel. The ceremony was something the team does for the seniors to appreciate all the teamwork and hard work that was contributed over their years. “We were just going to recognize them and give a flower to their moms. Its their last night wrestling in here so it’s their last home match so we always like to recognize them and their contributions to what we have been doing” said Engel.

The overall season for the boys wrestling team has been good. “Tonights senior night, and we are leading up to the championships so everything we do is for February, for the city championships, and then going into state. So were building and hopefully we peak at the right time…” stated Engel.

Two senior wrestlers that show great leadership and stand out the most on the team are Captains Piotr Krupa and Brendan Gallo. Engel believes that both of them are elite wrestlers and show great leadership when it comes to the team. “ Our captains Piotr Krupa and Brendan Gallo for sure are great leaders and both great wrestlers. Brendan currently, just last week, went up to be the all time Taft win leader and he’s going on that, the other one’s ranked at state and has been a great leader for us.”

After the seniors received their roses and congratulation, the team had a match against Riverside Brookfield, which Taft dominated. All of the hard work the team has put in worked its way through to this point and without leadership and teamwork, they wouldn’t have reached its peak and continue to be a force to reckon with.
