The varsity boys wrestling season is off to an impressive start as they have already won their conference.

Senior  wrestler Ross Raucci (Div. 922) is confident in the team’s abilities based on their current performance. “Our team is doing well, we have already secured conference and we are on track to win the city title,” said Raucci who is currently out for the season due to an injury and hopes to return to the mat soon. However, he is still proud of his teammates and captains.  “Our captains are definitely the leaders of the team.”

“We are working hard in practice,” said one of the senior varsity wrestling captains, Piotr Krupa (Div. 927), when asked how his leadership is improving the team and influencing a successful season. “It helps the team be better conditioned and have a better sense of what they are doing on the mat.” Krupa was the 2018 City Wrestling Champion and the 2018 IHSA Regional Champion.

Senior Brendan Gallo (Div. 937) is also a team captain. Gallo is pleased with the team’s hard work, stating “we had a tournament at Niles West [on Dec 15th], we took fifth.” “There were a lot of good teams there, I was pretty proud of how we did.” Gallo expects the team to win “a city championship,” stating “that is a big goal of ours.”

Varsity wrestling coach and English teacher Brad Engel is also satisfied with the season so far. “We have had some good, tough matches. They are in a place we want them to be. The goal is to be good in February for the State series.”

The next city competition for varsity wrestling will be the Chicago Public Schools City Championship taking place over Martin Luther King day weekend, Jan 19th and 20th. The state finals take place on Feb 14th to the 16th at the University of Urbana Champaign, and hopefully Eagles bring a State title home.
