Chicago Police vehicles make their presence after school at Citgo, at the corner of Northwest Highway and Nagle Ave., as the gas station became a popular location for students as they wait for their bus ride home.

The increase of students at Citgo led to a loitering, which is standing or waiting around leisurely without apparent purpose. While loitering, issues arise  such as fighting, smoking and property damage. This has drawn not only Taft Principal Mark Grishaber to the area after school but also the abundance of Chicago Police Officers.

Not only is the amount of students affecting the CTA bus system and the amount of time it takes for kids to get home, but also the amount of police at Citgo leaves less officers patrolling the 16th District.

“I live in Jefferson Park. It used to take me maybe 25-30 minutes to load the bus and get home; however, now it has been taking me at least an hour. The amount of kids there has got to be 200 plus students. A good amount of them do not even take the bus; they stand around and cause issues,” said freshman Tristan Alzate, Div. 233.

“The increased amount of officers at Citgo means a decreased amount through the neighborhood. This means the safety of the 16th district goes down,” said a current 16th District police officer.

It is not confirmed how long the Chicago police officers will be patrolling Citgo after school, but based on the recent Local School Council (LSC) meeting, some more officers could be patrolling around Taft.

To help alleviate the problem, Grishaber recommends and arranged alternative transportation stops. Route 86 now stops at Bryn Mawr to avoid the Citgo.
