Taft’s jazz band’s has brought their year to an end with a final concert from the jazz ensemble and jazz lab band. On Tuesday, May 22 the two bands performed for an audience in Taft’s Auditorium a last collection of pieces the two groups have practiced this spring for a final accumulation of all their hard work this past year.

“Both the jazz ensemble and jazz lab band went on stage, the jazz ensemble played three songs, the jazz lab band played four songs after, and the concert closed with two final piece from the jazz ensemble. The jazz ensemble played Second Line, Count Bubba, and Moanin’. The lab band played Caravan, Night In Tunisia, The Jazz Police, and then they finished with Chameleon. Afterwards the jazz ensemble returned on stage and closed the concert with Count Bubba’s Revenge and Cold Duck Time,” said Kevin Harriman, director of both the jazz ensemble and jazz lab band.

Both bands have been working diligently this past year, playing both in and outside of school and even being involved in various fundraisers and events.

“We’ve been playing these piece for awhile, like our finale Cold Duck Time, which we’ve been working on for some time. Every period we try to cover as much material as possible in the time we have. It’s a lot to cover but I’m proud of the work we have put in our music,” said Teddy Ludwig, a trumpet player.

During the concert one player, Kevin Rodriguez, was honored or his playing the past year. Rodriguez was awarded on stage by Harriman during the concert.

“I was given a award for most improved jazz student. It’s an award given to the player the conductor feels has grown the most during their time in the jazz ensemble. I was really happy to receive the award and be honored for my playing. Jazz is something I will carry with me as I continue jazz into college,” said Rodrigues, a saxaphone player.

With their final concert past them the seniors of the bands now carry over their talent with them into college. While Harriman and the band’s plans for next year are unknown they are sure to only continue to grow in their abilities.
