The Taft Eagles frosh-soph soccer team lost yesterday against the Maine West Warriors with a final score of 3-1.

The Eagles were losing 2-0 in the first half after losing captain Sabrina Gamez with a head injury. Despite the 2-0 deficit the Eagles played confidently in the second half. Freshmen Mia Calovic scored the Eagles only goal. Shortly after, the Warriors added another goal, winning 3-1.

The game was a valuable learning experience for the Eagles who struggled at times with decisiveness, spacing and goal kicks. Head coach Basilis Giannetos is happy with how the team performed for their first game and is impressed with their perseverance, even with the gap between scores.

“Our game with Maine West was a very positive experience all the players were enthusiastic they embraced their roles and they gave 100 percent. I was pleased with the production of each player. The areas we need to improve on are clearing the ball from our defensive side and getting it down field. Specifically, our goal kicks that’s how we gave them their opportunities to score. We also need to learn how to finish our shots for goals. I want to thank my team manager Haley perez because she helped organize and motivate the girls to do their absolute best,” said Giannetos.

Gamez is happy with her team’s collaboration for their first game and hopes they can all work on what they need to for next game.

“We might not have won but we had fun and played good. We could work on some things and that’s what practice is for but in the end we all came together as a team and worked together,” said Gamez.

Their next game will be held on Saturday, April 7 at Taft against the Lane Tech Indians at 10:15 a.m.
