Taft’s Ukrainian Club is asking the Taft community to help the orphaned and struggling children in Ukraine by donating children’s clothing and toys.

Ukrainian Club is holding a drive for anyone to donate new or gently used clothing and toys. The drive is happening now at Taft and will continue until March. 16th. The club is looking for infant to children’s new or lightly used clothes (0 months – size 16), shoes, and toys. They would like all donations to be unwrapped. To drop off the items there are two places one could go. One donation box is located at the main entrance and the other is in the main office. The reason for the drive is that the members of the club have been concerned with the well-being of the children who are unable to help themselves. This drive will help those who need it in Ukraine by supporting them with clothing and toys.

“This is the first year that the Ukie club has really taken off and all the members are very proud of this. So far we have determined that we can assist others in need due to war and other uncontrollable circumstances. We wanted to begin our donation drive during Christmas time, but saw that many clubs were already doing so for other causes. We decided to pick a time of the year when people are often forgotten. The members are also writing letters to the orphans to let them know that they are thought of and supported here in America,” said club sponsor, Christine Medunycia.

When the drive ends the clothes and toys will be separated by age and size; and then packaged to be sent to Ukraine along with a description of who the club is, what they have done and why, photos of the club, and the supportive letters the students in Ukrainian Club have made.

“Right now, there are about 750 institutions housing 106,000 orphans in Ukraine, with the majority of them being “social orphans” who were abused or abandoned by their parents and were placed in the care of others.  Every three days an orphan with a disability dies, usually because they didn’t get the necessary medical attention. In Ukraine, the orphanage, known as an Internat, is a mixed boarding school for orphans and children from families living in poverty and is a catch-all for children of every background and need. … Ukraine, achieved independence from the Soviet Union in 1991. This independence brought joy as well as instability and economic turmoil. The economy is growing, but millions of people still live in poverty across Ukraine today,” said via. article from Hope Now.

Taft Ukrainian Club has already received a few donations towards the drive, but are looking for as much as they can get. Every gesture or small donation is greatly appreciated, so donate to the drive to show support  for your fellow peers’ club.
