Biology teacher Susan Groziak takes action after seeing a terminally ill boy ask for one last wish. Jacob Thompson, from Maine, is diagnosed with stage four neuroblastoma and wished for Christmas cards from around the world to be sent to him at Barbara Bush Children’s Hospital at Maine Medical Center.

“I saw the message on the internet that Jacob had terminal stage four brain cancer, and he just wanted to celebrate Christmas. Unfortunately he wasn’t going to make it to Christmas. I felt impelled to help him because I think every child should have their last wish before they die and this was his last wish,” said Groziak.

Although these cards are not from another country, it was a form of contributing to Jacob’s collection of cards. These cards included pictures of each of the classes grouped together with loving messages on large papers.

“I had the kids decorate the classroom for each photo and they presented themselves as festive as they pleased. Some brought lights and wrapped them around themselves and lit themselves up like Christmas trees. Each class had five minutes to formulate a picture for me to take to put into the card being sent,” said Groziak.

Biology student Rachel Cordero purchased a personal gift for Jacob because of the impact his story had on her.

“I got him the little elf globe from the Christmas movie, Elf. I wanted to do something nice for him. I really hope he likes it. It is one of my favorite Christmas movies so I wanted to share that with him,” says Cordero.

Altogether the package sent to Jacob included a Christmas card with pictures from Ms. Groziak’s biology class, a stuffed animal penguin, and the elf globe.

This proves it is never too early to spread holiday joy this season. One small gesture could make a very important wish come true.
