Chicago Scholars is an organization that encourages students with academic drive to move forward in the college application process with the help of mentors and their own student group called “cohorts”. Chicago Scholars must be first generation college students who come from a background that does not give them many resources.

It is a support system for these students through counseling and mentoring. All Chicago Scholars receive the help needed to find their best match and fit colleges. Scholars are guided through the college transition process by mentors and staff.

“We were assigned 3-4 mentors along with a counselor. We work closely with our counselors once a month to begin the college process with. Your mentors check in with you to see how you’re doing if you need any help along the way. It is definitely a great support system,” says Kagna Hou.

According to www.chicagoscholars.org, 88 percent of Chicago Scholar graduates graduate college within six years. Students in the program have attended over 250 unique colleges and universities across the country.

Chicago Scholars looks for students who are juniors in highschool, live and attend school in Chicago, are first generation college students, and are academically committed. It is also important to show leadership within their school or communities. Chicago Scholars are students who are determined to attend a four year college.

“So far I’ve gotten accepted into three colleges: UIC, Bradley University, and IIT. I’ve gotten a scholarship for $25,000 a year from IIT and a $15,000 a year from Bradley,” says Jacob Voegtle.

Jennifer Perez also recognizes how much Chicago Scholars has helped her.

“Honestly, without Chicago Scholars I would be totally lost in the college process right now and completely under prepared for life in general. Without them, I would not have gotten accepted to the University of Tampa, which is one of my dream schools, with their presidential merit scholarship,” said Perez.

Although it is still early in the school year, Chicago Scholars have been working towards their goals and have already received multiple acceptance letters from schools all over the country. They also encourage non-Chicago Scholars to be proactive in the application process.

“Definitely apply and make sure your application stands out. If it wasn’t for Chicago Scholars, right now everyone is stressing about deadlines and I’m finished, all I have to worry about is my school work because I got started so soon,” said Jacqueline Mendoza.

Chicago Scholars has proven to be a great advantage for its students, and is helping them create a path for a successful college experience.
