Taft band teacher James Newman was the recipient of a new liver last Saturday after living  with asymptotic Hepatitis C for 35 years. He is expected to be released on Friday from Loyola Hospital after six and a half days in hospice following the six to eight hour surgery and won’t be back to teach for a minimum of 12 weeks.

On Friday, Feb. 2 2018, Mr. Newman received a call at 11:30 p.m. to come to the hospital by 7 a.m. the next morning, as they had a new liver for him.

Despite the availability of many treatments he decided not get his condition treated, when balancing the changes in success rate, toxicity, and the fact that he felt healthy for many years.  However after seeing advertisements for new treatments for Hep C, he consulted his doctor and 6 to 8 months after seeing the ads, he was notified of a new  treatment that was ideal for his genotype of the condition.

“It was a shock as I really did not expect to get one this soon” said Mr. Newman in an interview.

Then in January 2017, he started the treatment and was successfully cured of the Hepatitis. Before the cure his doctors had found two lesions on his liver, one of which was cancerous and the other non-cancerous but with atypical growth. The cancerous lesion was successfully treated. Because of the cancer diagnosis he was put on the transplant list for a new liver and was given a higher number after being listed for  6 months. This number was raised every 3 months on while being on the waiting list, so that the healthy liver can be put in a healthy person for a better outcome.

After his operation, he received his new liver and has been recovering ever since. He spent a total of 6 ½ days  before being released to go home from the hospital and will not be at Taft for another 12 weeks.

For students who would like to reach out to  Mr. Newman, he can be reached through his CPS email.
