In a battle of the Northwest side on Saturday, the Taft Eagles took on the Green and Gold Shamrocks of Saint Patrick High School.

The Eagles, however, could not keep up with the high-intensity offense of the Shamrocks and fell to 1-4 after a 69-33 blowout loss.

The Eagles trailed by twenty-five points at the end of the first half.

Head coach Aaron Levin said, they are only five games into the season, they have played quite possibly their toughest five game stretch of the year.

The leading scorer for Taft was senior forward Piotr Gago with 12 points.  Senior, Jakwon Derry did play a major role for the Eagles, scoring six points, including one steal that lead to a fast break dunk, and multiple boards for Taft. Other leading scorers for the Eagles were Christian Tan with nine points and Chris Garcia with seven points.

“Derry and Gago, as well as Andrew Plucinski, were all showing lots of leadership on a team with only upperclassmen and it showed in the game even if it wasn’t through the box score,” said Coach Levin.

On the other side of the court, Justin Walker and Dominic Galati led all scorers with 15 points each and Christopher Lara and Jakob Medina each had nine points.

Taft continues their season on Wednesday, as they kick off conference play and look to improve their defensive struggles against Lake View. The game is at Lakeview High School on Wednesday at 5 p.m.
