English teacher Adrienne Carmona, like many others loves participating in races and marathons. Over this past summer, she participated in a 70 mile race called the Ironman.

“I did a half Ironman this summer in the Philippines and it consists of three disciplines, it’s a swim, then a bike and then a run and it’s a total of 70.3 miles. So it’s a 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike and a 13.1 mile run,” said Carmona.

Carmona spent months training in preparation all throughout last year’s school year.

“It was 6 months of training. It’s really being disciplined in trying to balance all three out. It’s early morning wake ups to workout or after work, working out and focusing on that,” said Carmona.

Through training and preparation, Carmona continued to face challenges throughout the race preparation. However, the challenges were nothing new to her because it was not her first race.

“Out of the three for me, I would say the bike[was the most challenging part]  just because I am a weak biker, I am a strong swimmer and I am a solid runner,” said Carmona.

Carmona decided to take on the Ironman race to inspire girls to participate in sports.

“Back in 2009, I started working for a non-profit. It encourages young girls to play sports and we started a triathlon program with the girls. They were between [ages] seven and eighteen and ever since then, I told myself I would end up doing an Ironman one day,” said Carmona.

Not only does the race take a toll on one’s body, but it takes a toll on one’s emotional health also.

“It’s a lot of mental toughness because when you’re training, sometimes you just  want to give up but, it’s understanding that at the end, you want to things to be easy. So, you train hard and you race easy, that is what we always say; and make sure you just stay positive about it because anything can happen during the day of, so you just have to be prepared,” said Carmona.

Although the Ironman race is a challenge that involves dedication and persistence, it is still achievable.

“If they enjoy a challenge and physically want to go through with, I think it makes you a stronger person: mentally, emotionally and physically,” said Carmona.

Carmona demonstrated a good example of pushing limits, and achieving goals that seem out of reach, but are very much accomplishable. This upcoming April, she plans to participate in another half Ironman race in Texas.
